Read Chapter two before responding.

The copious amount of ash produced by coal-burning furnaces throughout the city had to go somewhere, and one dumping ground was in Corona, Queens, or as Fitzgerald refers, the valley of ashes:

“This is the valley of ashes, a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the form of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air. Occasionally a line of gray cars crawls . . . immediately the ash-gray men swarm up with leaden spades . . . which screens their obscure operations from your sight” (23).

The valley of ashes is everything the Eggs appear not to be—appear being the key word. One critic says that the valley of ashes symbolizes the moral decay which is veiled by the wealthy appearance of the Eggs; beneath this outward appearance (pretention) is the same ugliness that runs through the valley of ashes.

Do you agree or disagree with this based on what we’ve read thus far? Think about the description of both the Eggs and the valley of ashes. Support your response with specific encounters, interactions, and inferences.

Next, think about your own lives and experiences. Do outward appearances always project accurate inner character? Think about social class (including the poorest of characters presented in the valley of ashes). Can one truly be above someone? Or are we all rather grounded to some mutual root? How does this relate to the story and how would this affect the American dream?

Think about this before responding—there is much more going on here than what appears (just like the Eggs!). A thorough response is assured the entire twenty points—so make it thorough!

Yes i agree eith the previous statement above. I think the vally of ashes does in a way symbolixe the east egg. I think this is because so far everyone we met in the east egg has been a 'bad person. For example Tom and myrtle are both cheating on there husband/wife. Also tom is an agressive man.
In life I do not think that outward apperences are accurate. This is because there is so much more to a person then how they look. For example we assume that a person who looks well put togther is rished and stuck up. Thats not always the case.
I dont thin anyone can be above anyone. We are all equal in my eyes and everyone have good and bad qualities no one is perfect.
This story affects the american dream by it doesnt make everyone equal.

Yes, I agree with that based on what I read, because the "Valley of Ashes" is the worst part to live in and the Eggs are the better parts to live in but East Egg is probably the best part to live in overall.
Some of the times people are the way they appear to be, but most people are not what they appear to be. Someone can wear all black and have a mohawk and lots of tattos but can be one of the kindest people out there. No one person can be above any person but people, everyone, always put themselves or other people above others just because they dont like someone, but overall no one should be above anyone. This relates to "American Dream" because everyone should be living the American Dream but most people didn't take the opportunities to lead them in the direction of their own American Dream.

I agree because I feel that eggs are just a name and ways to divide te people who live there. It justs ways to start drama between the areas. The eggs might seem happy and strong on the outside but the people on the inside aren't. Many of the couples are having affairs and they don't care about it. This will hurt them in the furture and will make others look bad who live in the egg. I think that the person you are on the outside is the character you are inside. The person you are reflects how you act and who you are inside. No one is better than anyone. We are all the same in different ways. Like dasiey she is married but goes out with other people and she thinks she is better than others.

I agree with the critic. The Eggs seem confident and strong but they also seem careless. Many couples are not being faithful to each other and don't seem to care, which will affect the Eggs eventually. I agree that the outward apprerence protects the character within.

I agree with the critic's word. Even though both eggs are socially different in wealth, they both have the same relative issues, with people having careless affairs and being racist. Which eventually could lead to both eggs destroying their emotional and physical enviroment.

I believe that the outward appearance does effect the inner but, also the outward can hide so much. i dont think it matters on ones wealth or social class. I believe all people are equal. People in the West egg think they are better than the East egg but they all still have the same problems.

I think what the critics are right and I do agree with what they think. The eggs are to separate them into like classes I think. I thorough my own experiences most of the time appearances do tell who a person is but sometimes it doesn't. I feel that no one is better than anyone or higher than anyone in anyway. We are all human. Daisy is one of the character that feels she is better than her husband and so she goes out with other people.

I don't agree with it because in the book it makes the Valley of Ashes seem like a horrible, gloomy place. But from what I just read it don't seem like a horrible, gloomy place. Outward appearances don't always project accurate inner character. One cannot truely be above someone because God created everyone equal. This relates to the story because some people in the book look at others as less valuable.

I believe the valley of ashes is how the book says it is, because it is the less desirable part of town and the people who live in it are dirty and dont have much money. In my life, i believe that there are many cases where you see someone and are like there rich, but in reality they arent, or vice versa.

I agree with the critic. In the book I learned that the Valley of Ashes is one of the worst places to live with East abd West Egg on the top. East Egg would be the top choice though. But neither one of these 2 places doesn't really seem to care about promises and commitments they've made with people they love.. Almost everyone is cheating on everyone and that isn't right .. This story affects the American Dream because in the boom people are basically born the way they're gona be. The American Dream says that everyone is basically born equal.
