OK so here's what you need to do. Below these directions is a passage regarding the American dream. Read this passage and reply to the question (in bold) that follows in no less than FIVE sentences.

"Achieving the American dream implies reaching some threshold of well being, higher than where one began but not necessarily dazzling. As Bruce Springsteen puts it, "I don't think the American dream was that everybody was going to make . . . a billion dollars, but it was that everybody was going to have an opportunity and the chance to live a life with some decency and some dignity and a chance for some self-respect.'
"The American dream consists in becoming better off than some comparison point, whether one's childhood, people in the old country, one's neighbors, a character from a book, another race or gender--anything or anyone that one measures oneself against" (Hochschild 16).

What does the American dream mean to you? In your own opinion, how do aspects of the American dream apply differently to each American class (lower class, middle class, upper class)? Lastly, what are your thoughts on an online assignment such as this?

The American dream for me is a nice house with my family. Where we can live happily, without worry and where we can have fun. Where we don't have to worry about losing our house, or about our neighbors being people who could be dangerous. The American dream is just wanting to be happy and safe in life here in America.

To me the American dream means owning your own land. Not worrying about bills or money. The lower class American dream might be to have enough money to get the things they need. The American dream is different to everyone. Take advantage of the freedom we are given.I think the online assignments are better than the ones with pen ans paper. they take less time.

The American dream to me would be being able to have a nice house with a bed to sleep on every night. Have a family that loves and cares about you. Never having to worry about money or bills because they would always be taken care of. There would be no violence, or stress because everyone would be happy and there would be no need for it. There would be no worries, no famines, and no depressions. The American dream differs from each social class because the mind sets are different. Say if I was from a upper class person the American dream for me would be expensive clothes, a brand new million dollar car. A crazy big house, because they don’t have to worry about the difficulties most people do because they have an ungodly amount of money they can throw around. That would be their dream. Now say I was from the middle class; my American dream would be to have a nice house, a big loving family, a nice car nothing to extravagant but still nice things. I say my point of view from where I’m at right now. Some people who live on the streets and don’t have a job and can’t go to school. Their American dream could be simply them getting a hot meal every day, or some blankets and sweaters to keep them warm on cold winter nights. Everyone’s perspective on the American dream is different; it just depends on where they are coming from.

I like the online blog; I think it’s better than having to waste paper and my hand hurting :)

I think the American dream is a constant longing to due and be better than you are or once were. It means that you never give up on your improving you past, present and future. I think the American dream is strived for by the lower and middle class more than those of the upper class. I believe this to be true because the higher your class, the less you desire to improve and the more one might desire to dabble on material items and their own social status. I enjoy the online assignments and agree with Ashley Paige. It helps reduce waste and in turn helps the planet. The hardest part is remembering to get on a computer to do complete the assignment.

The American Dream to me is having the same opportunities as all other human beings, to live your life to the fulled extent, and to make your life the way you want it to be. The aspects of the american dream would apply differently toward the lower class, because they get less opportunities in life because of the amount of money their families make. The aspects apply differently to the middle class, because they pay the most taxes, and they're stuck in the middle. They make too much money to get special benifits, such as food stamps, but not enough to be able to live life like the upper class. The aspects apply differently to the upper class also. They pay less taxes than the middle class. And they make so much. So, if a family of 4 wanted to send both children to college, buy them both cars, and help with expenses, they can.
I think the blog is a good idea, but also a bad one. It may be easier for some, but it can be easily forgotten, and some people don't have easy access to a computer or internet like others do.

I believe the American dream is about bettering yourself and conditions around you. For lower class it means making more money and improving life. For middle class it means doing what you can to improve things in your life. For the upper class it's about doing what makes you happy.
