Consider the following before responding:

Fitzgerald continues to reference western heroes by naming Gatsby’s benefactor “Dan Cody,” an allusion to Daniel Boone and Buffalo Bill Cody. In the late eighteenth century, Daniel Boone, an American pioneer, created routes for westward expansion to what is now Kentucky and Missouri. Narratives of these exploits were published in magazines, inspiring young people with accounts of courage. Buffalo Bill Cody began his career with a series of Wild–West experiences, working for Custer, shooting buffalo, and acting as a scout for the U.S. Army.

In Chapter 7, we learn of Gatsby’s origins as James Gatz of North Dakota. In the novel, Gatsby has become his alter ego, leaving James Gatz behind as he travels the world as Dan Cody’s steward.

How do Fitzgerald’s allusions—to Daniel Boone and Buffalo Bill Cody—apply to Gatsby as a character? Is Gatsby doomed to tragedy as long as he disguises his Midwestern origins in favor of a more extravagant, fictional biography? Do you think Gatsby ever knew a Dan Cody—why or why not (I’m looking for support from the book!)?

Keep in mind that Fitzgerald’s allusions are in regard to Dan Cody, not Gatsby himself. Respond in no less than five, thorough sentences for the entire twenty points.

Allusion -- an implied or indirect reference especially in literature; also : the use of such references.

This applies to Gatsby because they seem too be who he was and who he wants to be. Gatsby was in the military (army) like bill Cody was. Gatsby wants to be even more inspiring and courageous so he can impress daisy even more. I feel he will be even more doomed. It will end up showing on Gabsy and will likely to ruin things he has with everyone else he has with everyone else because they would feel less highly of him. I think Dan Cody's purpose is to get gasbys stories across I think he just doesn't want to admit he knew a Dan Cody. I think he makes up things or bends the stories

They apply to Dan Cody because he is the one who Fitzgerald alludes Daniel Boone and Buffalo Bill. But they also apply to Gatsby's character because I think Gatsby wants to be like Dan Cody in a way to get what he wants which is Daisy. Yes, I do feel he will be doomed. I feel that the true Gatsby will come out and people will look down upon him. I feel like he never knew a Dan Cody. I feel as if he's making this image of a person that he really wants to be himself.

Fitzgerald's allusions to Dan Boone And Bill cody apply to Gastby in many ways. Some are they seem to be who he was and who he wants to be. For example Gatsby was in the army like Bill Cody. Gatsby probabaly wants to be more inspireing and couragous like Daniel Boone tomake a better impression on Daisy. Yes, I feel Gastby is doomed to tradgey. In my opion the truth is always found. No one can live a lie for ever. When the truth does come out he will be looked on badly and less of higher class whch could ruin his firendships or business relansonships. I feel like Gastby did know a dan cody and is using his stories inorder to prove his own. I feel like the allusion adds so much to to story.

I'm not really sure how to answer the question correctly but what I think the correct answer is that Fitzgerald applies Gatsby by connecting his actions to those other characters.. But in my opinion I do think he us doomed to tragedy because he can only disguise it for so long until something happens. From the book I don't think he knew a Dan Cody because he is too dull of a character to know those types of people.

In this book I believe that Dan Cody was "created" as a mix of both Daniel Boone and Bill Cody. I do not think that he is doomed to tragedy though, this could end up playing a surprising twist due to the personality of the characters or it could just stay the same as it did the whole book. I think gatsby has met a Dan Cody possibly during the time he was at Oxford. He is such a hidden character it is very possible.

Yes gatsby Is doomed because if his history is revealed this illusion of that he is a war veteran and and his inheritance won't be worth anything. I don't think gatsby ever knew Dan Cody. If he did he would of said something about it along with tell his Oxford stories. Gatsby is trying to seem like a famous upstanding man. When in reality he just a soggy war veteran.

I believe that Gatsby is doomed, from the standpoint that as information surfaces his past he will be in alot of trouble in the present. i do not think gatsby ever knew Dan cody but however he himself is an allusion like Dan Cody is.
